How to use the upper arm sphygmomanometer correctly

2024 11/18

Using an upper arm sphygmomanometer (a common type of blood pressure monitor) correctly is essential for accurate readings. Follow these steps for proper use:

Preparation

  1. Relax and Rest:

    • Sit in a quiet place for 5–10 minutes before measuring.
    • Avoid caffeine, smoking, or exercise for at least 30 minutes beforehand.
  2. Position Yourself:

    • Sit with your back supported and feet flat on the floor.
    • Rest your arm on a table or flat surface at heart level.
  3. Remove Clothing:

      • Ensure the upper arm is bare. Roll up your sleeve or remove any tight clothing.

    Placing the Cuff

    1. Locate the Artery:

      • Find the brachial artery inside your elbow crease (on the side closer to your body). Many cuffs have markers to help align with the artery.
    2. Wrap the Cuff:

      • Place the cuff around the upper arm (1–2 cm above the elbow crease).
      • Ensure the cuff is snug but not too tight (you should fit two fingers under it comfortably).
    3. Align the Tube:

      • If the cuff has a tube, align it with the brachial artery. The tube should run down toward your hand.

        Measuring Blood Pressure

        1. Turn on the Device:

          • Follow the device instructions. Automatic models will inflate the cuff and measure the pressure.
        2. Stay Still:

          • Do not move, talk, or fidget during the measurement.
        3. Wait for Results:

          • The device will display systolic and diastolic blood pressure readings, often with your pulse rate.
